co|balt «KOH blt», noun.
1. a hard, silver-white, metallic chemical element with a pinkish tint. Cobalt is found only in combination with other elements, especially nickel and iron. Cobalt is used in steel for hardness, and in paints and glass for color. »

Cobalt, like tungsten, imparts the property of retaining a keen cutting edge to steel even at high temperatures (White and Renner).
